Left school at nine. Was accountant before becoming professional writer in 1919. Well known for his stories of country life. Published Adam and Eve and Pinch Me in 1921. Other volumes of stories include The Black Dog (1923) and Lucy in Her Pink Jacket (1954) as well as Collected Poems (1928).
