Made Secretary of State in 1550 and knighted in 1551. Adopted Catholicism during reign of Mary I. Appointed Chief Secretary of State by Elizabeth I. Responsible for successful policies of the Elizabethan era. Created Baron Burghley in 1571, became Lord Treasurer in 1572 and remained so until his death. Built and restored mansions including Burghley, Theobalds and Cecil House.
