Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Became Liberal MP for Stirling in 1868. Became Liberal leader in 1899 and was Prime Minister 1905-08. Launched campaign to reduce power of House of Lords, led to Parliament Act of 1911. Resigned on 4 April 1908 and died 11 April.
