Joined Hawker Engineering Company in 1923 and became chief designer. Designed single-engined military aircraft including the Fury, Hart and Demon biplanes and his first monoplane, the Hurricane. Also designed Tornado, Typhoon, Tempest and the jet-engined Sea Hawk and jump-jet Harrier.
