Son of a Plymouth Brethren preacher. Educated at Aberdeen, Cambridge and Vienna. Edited the Evangelical Quarterly (1949-80) and Palestine Exploration Quarterly (1957-71). Wrote commentaries on nearly every New Testament book. Books included the autobiographical In Retrospect (1980) and The Real Jesus (1985).
