He was a noted British barrister and judge who, with his experience of wartime trials, served as the alternate Britsh judge during the Nuremburg trials after World War II. He was appointed to the Privy Council in 1947, and in 1950 was made a Lord Justice of Appeal. He was also made Chairman of the Court of the University of London from 1946. He retired in 1957 and was given a Peerage as 1st Baron Birkett the following year.
