His interest in Chemistry dates back to an experiment in grammar school when he was only twelve years old, where he prepared beautiful, well-formed crystals by reaction of aqueous ammonia with copper sulfate. After studying at Durham University he became lecturer and ultimately professor in chemistry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. In 1966 he moved to Princeton University, and from 1969-1993 was a professor at the University of California, Berkley.
