After studying at Cambridge she has worked widely in radio and presented television series on current affairs and the arts including Meeting Point (1964), Late Night Line-Up (1965-72) and Heart of the Matter from 1988. Publications include The Complete Traveller (1977) and The Heart of The Matter (1996). She was appointed chair of the British Film Institute in 1999.
