Worked on televisions and as scriptwriter before film debut with Bugsy Malone (1976), followed by Midnight Express (1978), Birdy (1985) and Mississippi Burning (1988). Later films include The Commitments (1991), Evita (1996) and Angela’s Ashes (1999).
