Tuesday 4th August 2009 Super ants charged with fire risk
A breed of ‘super’ ants has infiltrated this country and could pose a serious fire risk due to their attraction to electricity. The ants, lasius neglectus or Asian super ant have been found at Hidcote manor near Chipping Campden in Gloucester.

Although the ants have already been seen on mainland Europe this is the first recorded sighting of them in the UK. Unusually the ants have a compulsion to follow sources of electricity that even overrides their natural desire for food or drink. While they look similar to the common black garden ant, they form super-colonies hundreds and thousands of times more populated than our native ant. Gloucestershire
