Wellington has a long and interesting history and is to be found in the county of Shropshire – today it has been absorbed into the New Town of Telford but Wellington still retains its identity as an historic market town nestling against Shropshire’s most notable feature the Wrekin. On a clear day the summit of the Wrekin provides a visual feast as a total of 15 counties can be seen and many a visitor can be seen trying to recall what they are! Wellington though offers more than being surrounded by some of the best countryside in Shropshire – the town is still considered to be a market town and its retail market is the oldest in the area. The town also has a number of interesting buildings – in particular All Saints Parish Church was designed by George Steuart in the late 18th century to replace the medieval church which in turn may have replaced the original pagan temple from when the town was first settled in pre-Christian Saxon times. All Saints Church is considered to be one of the finest 18th century churches and bearing in mind that the architect was also responsible for the design of Attingham Park then this should come as no surprise.
