Jesmond is a residential suburb of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England. Originally known as Gese Muth as it overlooks the valley at the mouth of the river Ouse. Shortly after the Norman Invasion, an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary supposedly occurred at St.Mary’’s Rock, in the midst of the stream next to Ridley Hill and the name was changed to Jesmond or ‘hill of Jesus’. A slipper chapel was built on the west side of the valley, later falling into disrepair and then ruin after the Reformation in the sixteenth century, whereupon pilgrims removed their shoes before continuing to the site of the apparition barefoot. That part of the Great North Road is called Pilgrim Street due to the processions that occurred there. In 1835 Sir William George Armstrong, first Baron of Cragside,.had Jesmond Dean built In preparation for his marriage. Acquiring more of the adjacent valley as his wealth increased, by 1862 he owned much of the area now known as Jesmond Dene. He enclosed the land, planted woodland, created a waterfall and grotto and planted trees and shrubs. After donating the Armstrong Bridge to the people of Newcastle, he later donated Armstrong Park and in 1883 presented the Mayor with Jesmond Dene as a Public Park to be maintained as a natural setting for all time for the townspeople to enjoy.
