West Huntspill is a village on the Huntspill Level in Somerset, situated close to the mouth of the River Parrett. It is only about two miles from the seaside resort of Burnham on Sea and offers easy access to the busy M5 motorway. A possible Iron Age settlement has been discovered at nearby Alstone. Records first mention Huntspill in about 796 AD, when Aethelmund, a nobleman under King Offa of Mercia, granted the area to Glastonbury Abbey. The Domesday Book of 1086 also gives Huntspill a mention as 'Honspil'. The area has a historic tendency to flooding from the River Parrett and it was one of the places affected in the Bristol Channel Floods of 1607. Between 1799 and 1802 a defensive sea wall was built in an attempt to protect Huntspill from further flooding. St Peter and All Hallows Church at West Huntspill is worth a visit, despite being all but destroyed by fire in 1878. The Hamstone pillars of the nave in the 13th century church were reddened by the blaze. The church was rebuilt and restored as nearly as possible to its original condition and reopened by 1880. Refreshments and accommodation in West Huntspill are available at the Crossways Inn and the Laburnum House Lodge Hotel.
