The Somerset village of Saltford sits roughly halfway between Bath and Bristol on both the A4 and the River Avon which link those two cities. Though its population is only around 4200 Saltford boasts four pubs, its own primary school, and a marina. Architecturally it has also much to recommend it: the church of St Mary has a Saxon tower adjoining the main structure which is Norman; Kelston Brass Mill, a reminder of the settlement’s water-powered industrial past, is a scheduled monument and grade II starred listed building; and there is a manor house which contains large elements dating from the 12th century. A walk along the Avon attracts many visitors; a shorter route locally, another path of three miles heading towards Bath rather than 23 along the river will suit less hardy hikers. The High Street has shops and eateries, and the settlement is well appointed for the other necessities of life like dentists and doctors, and a few of the fripperies including an 18-hole golf course just south of the place and Bath racecourse to the north. In June the village holds a week-long festival with musical and community events.
