Events in Loch Ness | 10 Places to Stay
Loch Ness is the best known and the largest of the four Lochs in the Great Glen in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, situated south-west from the city of Inverness.
Loch Ness is famous as the home of ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster, an elusive prehistoric lake monster. The first recorded sighting of the ‘water-beast’ was c565 by St Columba, although there were no other reported sightings until 1932, Loch Ness has been the subject of many documentaries and films.
Loch Ness is noted for the volume of water it holds with some areas reaching 754ft in depth, it stretches 23 miles long and one mile wide with the village of Fort Augustus lying at the far south-west end.
The ruins of Urquhart Castle are built on a rocky promontory overlooking Loch Ness with excellent views over the Loch an idea location to spot Nessie.
The Loch is a popular tourist attraction; there are two Loch Ness Monster visitor centres with exhibitions and boat-cruises around the Loch in the nearby village of Drumnadrochit.
The area is abundant with holiday accommodation, hotels, tea-rooms and restaurants. Activities include horse-riding, boat-cruises, fishing, cycling, forest walks. Part of ‘The Great Glen Way’ the long distance footpath runs the length of Loch Ness.
