Located in the County of Cheshire in the North West of England Middlewich originally built its local industry on salt production. We know that the Romans were heavily involved in salt extraction because local archaeologists have found the lead salt plans that were used and these are inscribed with the names of a few of the Roman salt makers. During the course of these excavations evidence of Iron Age brine kilns were found so Middlewich has a long and established history. Today though Middlewich revels in its excellent transport links making this a popular location for the resident and the tourist who can easily access Middlewich from the M6 at Junction 18. Many come to enjoy the historic periods that are predominant in the area, from the black and white timber framed houses, to the church which has been in its present location since around the 12th century through to those who enjoy a simple walk along the Trent and Mersey Canal and Shropshire Union Canal which are close by. Not many people appreciate just how convenient Middlewich is for canal boat cruising with the local network allowing easy access to Llangollen, Chester, Ellesmere Port and even to Runcorn and Manchester through some of the best Cheshire countryside. Middlewich has plenty to offer, with its local market, excellent local produce and wide variety of activities it is easy to appreciate why this is a popular location.
