It is hardly surprising that Exmouth lies where the river Ex meets the sea. It is a perfect base from which to explore Devon’s beautiful coastline and interesting inland towns and villages. Here stretches the longest seafront in Devon and Cornwall, 2 miles of golden sands and rock pools, making it ideal for family holidays. The estuary of the Ex is well known for its abundance of wildlife. For railway enthusiasts, set in realistic scenery on the seafront is the Great Exmouth “00” Model Railway, the largest of its gage in the world. There are wonderful views of the river along the Avocet train line, taking its name from the rare bird which winters on the Ex estuary and is a prize among birdwatchers. With a busy town centre well served by road and rail links, Exmouth is one of Devon’s livelier towns. It has a large shopping centre, indoor market and no shortage of shops and places to seek refreshment. Traffic free shopping can be enjoyed in the pedestrianised Magnolia Centre. During the 1700’s, Exmouth became fashionable as a place where wealthy men and women might regain health. Heritage Town Trails provide routes for visitors to discover Exmouth’s past.
