Hinckley is a busy Market Town in Leicestershire with a fascinating history dating back to Saxon times, renowned for it’s hosiery manufacture and production of stockings in the 19th Century, and since Medieval times has held a market every Monday, and is home to the ‘Triumph Motorcycle Co’. This pretty town has the ‘Ashby Canal’ running through it meandering through the countryside for 22 miles, whether you choose to climb aboard one of the colourful boats or fish for one of the many Perch, Bream or Chub, artists and photographers will wish to linger, the flash of colour from the Kingfisher or the grace of the Herons are waiting to be captured. The Hinckley and District Museum in a 17th Century timber framed cottage details the history of hosiery within the town, there are other exhibits including a model of a Roman Villa that was discovered in nearby Sapcote. If the tales of battles with arrows flying and the death of a king interests you then a visit to Bosworth Battlefield is a must, where five Centuries ago the armies of Richard 111 and Henry Tudor fought a bloody battle in the Wars of The Roses, this saw the end of Medieval times and the start of the Tudors, there are exciting exhibits detailing the battle, and a replica of a Medieval village, including an Inn, apothecary and church what more could be asked for. Perhaps a visit to the George Elliot Hospital Museum which gives a fascinating insight into medicine, exhibits include an Iron Lung, a 19th Century Medical Chest and X Ray machine dating back to the first World War. Or how about a visit to Tropical Birdland, five acres of stunning natural woodland, where a walk through the aviaries housing Toucans, Owls, and Parrots is a pure delight.
