Shepherd's Bush was once a poor relation to Hammersmith, a perfect setting for the Sixties rag-and-bone-man comedy "Steptoe And Son". But modernisation has brought a new lease of life to this fun and exciting part of west London. The Shepherd's Bush Empire, a former music hall, has become a major concert venue. The famous Bush Theatre, a showcase for up-and-coming writers, has been revamped. The West 12 shopping and entertainment centre has been refurbished and expanded to include a multiplex cinema, snooker hall and fitness club, while northern areas benefit from a new swimming pool and gym. A huge shopping complex - the Westfield - is under construction in the White City district and due to open in 2008. Also in White City, the iconic BBC Television Centre - "The Doughnut" - hosts studio tours, which it might be wise to enjoy sooner rather than later, given current proposals to sell the building. At the heart of Shepherd's Bush is the green, surrounded by small shops, music and comedy clubs, and restaurants offering world cuisine (foodies might enjoy the local Middle Eastern Food Tour). Shepherd's Bush Market, which opened in 1914, sprawls along a narrow viaduct and is enduringly popular.
