Once a grand residential area, Piccadilly today is a wide, busy street in London's West End, stretching from Hyde Park Corner past Green Park to Piccadilly Circus. Along the way, there's much to see and do. Piccadilly is graced by some splendid hotels: the Athenaem, Le Meridien, the Park Lane Sheraton and, most famously, the Ritz offer five-star hospitality. Always worth a visit is Fortnum & Mason, the Piccadilly store famed for its luxury food, wine and hampers. Another attraction is the Royal Academy of Arts, which hosts exhibitions and special events, while the Wellington Museum, in Apsley House, displays a collection of military memorabilia belonging to the first Duke Of Wellington, who lived there. Also in Piccadilly is St James's parish church, designed by Christopher Wren and consecrated in 1684. It has an adjacent market selling antiques, arts and crafts from Tuesday to Saturday. Piccadilly Circus is famed for the statue popularly known as Eros and for its neon advertising displays, although today's signs are fewer and more often lit by LED. Close to all the major shopping, dining and theatre districts, Piccadilly Circus is home to the Criterion Theatre and the Trocadero entertainment complex, soon to be modernised.
