Ilford is a bustling suburb at the borders of east London and Essex. This former Saxon hamlet has an ancient history. Countless fossils of large animals have been excavated, famously the "Ilford Mammoth", with ten-feet tusks, now exhibited at the Natural History Museum. Ilford grew up with the railways, becoming a centre for manufacturing, service industries and major businesses. Dr Barnardo's girls' homes began in Ilford, and John Logie Baird experimented with his new invention - the TV - while living here. The rich history of the area is detailed at the town-centre museum. All kinds of entertainment is on the doorstep, including a Cineworld centre and lots of restaurants, pubs and clubs, notably Faces - a celebrity haunt. Ilford High Road is a shopper's dream, while the indoor Exchange Centre boasts 100 stores. Facilities for active types range from swimming to health and fitness centres, the 18-hole Ilford Golf Course and a scenic Roding Valley riverside walk. Regular sports are played at the 125-acre Valentines Park, which also offers beautiful gardens, ponds and a boating lake, fairs, firework displays and live music and plays. The indoor Kenneth More Theatre has a lively schedule, also hosting Redbridge Dance Festival events.
