East Dulwich has been described, memorably, as "an almost perfect example of a 'Victorian suburb'". Its leafy avenues and handsome houses have changed little since the late 1800s, although in several ways it differs from the other parts of Dulwich, even though they have also retained a traditional character. East Dulwich is a little younger, something of an upstart outsider. It developed not from a village nucleus but from scattered farms, later augmented by a number of roadside houses, and this loosely connected settlement only came together properly with the advent of the railways. Then, much farmland was sold to developers, and the residential area of East Dulwich came into its own. The oldest church, St John The Evangelist Church dates from 1865. Today, East Dulwich is populated by affluent home-owners attracted by both its Victorian authenticity and the contemporary buzz surrounding Lordship Lane. An ancient road including a fascinating but derelict Grade II-listed building called "Concrete House" and the birthplace of children's author Enid Blyton above a shop, Lordship Lane has become a wonderland of bookshops, delis, cafés, funky bars, restaurants, and organic and specialist shops for food-lovers. East Dulwich's Aquarius golf course meanwhile provides for more sedate pleasures.
