Drogheda is an ancient riverside town with a friendly, contemporary atmosphere famous for arts, culture and music. There's plenty of craic in the local bars and restaurants, and some of the more recent attractions include a waterpark, Funtasia, and a variety of shopping and business centres. Drogheda began to develop into today's modern settlement and a commuter town for Dublin workers in the 1990s, when the Irish economy was rising. Its most readily identifiable landmark is the viaduct over the River Boyne, carrying trains between Dublin and Belfast. The town is justly famous for Beaulieu House, a 17th Century mansion boasting four-acre gardens and a classic car museum. Even more celebrated is St Peter's Church, where a shrine to St Oliver Plunkett incorporates the saint's actual preserved head. Some other truly historic sights within a six-mile radius include the Bru na Boinne Neolithic monuments, the ruins of a round tower and three high crosses at Monasterboice, the Millmount mound and Martello tower, the imposing St Laurence Gate (remaining from the medieval town walls) and the site of the 1690 Battle of the Boyne. The town offers heritage walks - although those preferring grassier surfaces will enjoy well-regarded golf courses including the championship- quality County Louth Golf Club.
