Cushendall is a charming village also known as Capital of the Glens. Ranged around a bay in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the village is situated at the foot of Glenballyemon and close to Glenaan and Glencorp - three of the magical Glens of Antrim. Cushendall is overlooked by the mountain peaks of Lurigethan and Tievebulliagh, and has the further good fortune to be located on the exhilarating Antrim Coast Road. This was one of the country's first conservation villages, with a fine array of Georgian buildings at its heart. The Curfew Tower, at the crossroads, was built in the early 1800s as a prison. In 1993, it was bought by writer, artist and former pop prankster Bill Drummond, who turned the tower into an artists' residence. Some historic sights can be seen just outside Cushendall. A Stone Age court cairn, dating from 800 BC, is thought to mark the burial place of Celtic warrior poet Ossian, and the atmospheric ruins of Layde Church survive from the 1600s. Cushendall comes alive at night with traditional Irish music sessions, and it hosts the annual, ten-day Heart of the Glens festival. Sporting activities include boating, water sports, hill-walking, hurling and golf.
