Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, and the second largest city in Ireland after Dublin. There isn’t a city that has worked harder to put the troubles of its past behind it, and after major redevelopment in the area, Belfast now has an excellent variety of attractions and activities to offer its visitors which nestle in between some wonderful historical buildings and modern venues to ensure that there is something to entertain everyone in the family.

Being next to the mouth of the River Lagan and at the end of the long natural inlet of Belfast Lough, made Belfast the ideal location for the shipbuilding industry that it’s famous for. The world's largest dry dock is located here, and the giant cranes, Samson and Goliath, of the Harland and Wolff shipyard, who built the Titanic in 1912, can be seen from miles away. Whilst we’re on the subject of things that can be seen from afar, Belfast also contains the tallest building in Ireland. Windsor House stands at 80 metres (262 ft) and has twenty-three floors.

Not quite so tall, but with an impressive CV of its own is the landmark Waterfront Hall which is a concert hall and exhibition centre, chiefly used for classical instrumental performances. The dome of the building is coated in copper which in time will eventually turn green and reflect the 53 metre dome of Belfast City Hall and other Victorian buildings in the city centre. The Grand Opera House was completed in 1895, and after being bombed several times has been restored to its former glory and plays host to a variety of performing arts as does The Ulster Hall. For some of Belfast’s oldest and grandest buildings go to the Cathedral Quarter, and if all that heritage and culture proves to be thirsty work, then drop in at the the ornately decorated Crown Liquor Saloon in Great Victoria Street – it’s notable as being the only bar owned by the National Trust - the panels used in the restaurant on the first floor were meant for Brittanic, the sister ship of the Titanic.
After all that history, you might want to come back to the modern age with a trip to the new Odyssey Complex. This multi-faceted, incredible venue is home to The Arena – Ireland's biggest indoor stadium, with a capacity of 10,000, which hosts concerts and sporting events such as Belfast Giants matches; W5 –the highly acclaimed science exhibition demonstrating the powers of science; The Pavilion – which contains a whole host of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and the Sheridan IMAX – the first 3D IMAX in Northern Ireland, which has screened among other things Titanic and Ghosts of the Abyss. Without a doubt – something for everyone.
