Newtownards is an historic market town with a reputation for arts, crafts and shopping. The gateway to the Ards Peninsula, it's situated at the head of Strangford Lough and dominated by a spectacular hill topped by Scrabo Tower. A distinctive landmark, visible from miles away, the tower hosts an exhibition and is surrounded by a country park offering woodland walks and a "challenging" golf course with superb views. Newtownards is ranged round a central square containing perhaps the most impressive Georgian Town Hall in Northern Ireland. This listed building is home to the Arts Centre's two galleries and to regular concerts and theatrical performances. Other historic sights include the 17th Century Market Cross and the remains of an ancient Dominican friary. A more contemporary attraction, meanwhile, is the Avalon Guitar Factory guided tour. Newtownards also boasts a leisure centre, a sailing club and an airfield, staging air displays and motorbike and quad bike racing. Not far out of town, attractions on the Old Belfast Road include Kiltonga Nature Reserve, a golf driving range, and the 300-year-old Dundonald Old Mill, with Ireland's largest water wheel. On the Bangor Road, travellers will find the Somme Heritage Centre and the Ark Open Farm.
