Torosay Castle was completed in 1858 by the eminent architect David Bryce in the Scottish Baronial style. It is one of the finer examples of his work and possibly one of the few still used as a family home and open to the public. Bryce's clever architecture results in the Castle combining elegance and informality, grandeur and homeliness.

Inside Torosay Castle visitors are welcome to wander round the principle rooms which all contain a wide range of family portraits, memorabilia and antique furniture set in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

In the archive rooms visitors can learn all about David Guthrie James' adventurous life which includes sailing in one of the last Windjammers, successful escape from POW camp and polar exploration. Visitors are welcome to browse through all the material and books on show.

Torosay is surrounded by 12 acres of spectacular gardens including formal terraces (attributed to Sir Robert Lorimar) which are covered with roses, other climbers and underplanted with perennials, an impressive statue walk which consists of 19 limestone figures sculpted by Antonio Bonazza and brought to Torosay in about 1900, this remains one of the most significant collections of such statuary in Britain. Torosay gardens provide an interesting and unusual contrast of formal and woodland gardens, and the dramatic and wild scenery makes the setting all the more special.
