The City Art Gallery is one of the premier venues for the visual arts in the north. Its nationally designated fine art collections range from the early nineteenth century to the late twentieth centuries and to the art of our own times. An outstanding collection of English watercolours; fine Victorian academic and Pre-Raphaelite painting; late nineteenth century French pictures; 'probably the best collection of twentieth century British art outside London' (The Times); as well as one of the most extensive collections of modern sculpture, gives visitors an insight into the development of modern art. Its changing exhibition programme presents reviews and explorations of twentieth century art and some of the latest developments in the art of our times.
