St Giles's Day:
St Giles should be patron saint of compensation lawyers. Living as a hermit in 7th century Provence, sustained by milk from a doe he kept, Giles was wounded by the arrow of a royal huntsman stalking the animal. In recompense Giles was given fortune enough to found a monastery at St-Gilles-du-Gard, or the monastery was built for him by the king depending on the source. In this country his saint’s day was when two great fairs began: the one at Winchester, chartered by William Rufus, died out long ago; that at Oxford, of more recent foundation, is still kept though rather than adhering strictly to the September 1 start it is nowadays held on the first Monday and Tuesday in that month.
