12th of May - St Pancras’s Day

12th of May is the 132nd day of the year

St Pancras’s Day:
St Pancras was born in the kingdom of Phrygia in the late 3rd century, in what is now Turkey. Orphaned when a young child he was taken to Rome by his uncle Denis, or Dionysius. There, swayed by his uncle and by the Pope he converted to Christianity. One version of his story has Pancras, then a mere boy of 14, standing up to the Emperor Diocletian in person and refusing to deny his faith, for which he was beheaded. For his youth St Pancras became the patron saint of children. He was of great import to the early church in England as Augustine of Canterbury chose to dedicate a church to him, and what were supposed to be his relics were given to the king of Northumberland. Now of course we associate the name with the district in London and its magnificent Victorian station, reinvented now as the departure point for the high speed service to Europe.
