Studied chemistry at Magdalen College, Oxford. Assistant controller for experiments and research during WWI for RAF. Work on aircraft fuels led to system of octane rating. Adviser to Government in air defence, particularly radar during 1930s & 1940s. Elected FRS in 1926, received many military honours.
