Served in the Royal Flying Corps during WWI. Professor of Physics at Aberdeen University. Shared Nobel Prize for physics for the discovery of electron diffraction by crystals. Advised on making a superbomb during WWII, after war supported peaceful exploration of nuclear power. Elected FRS in 1930, knighted in 1943.
