Son of an impoverished infantry ensign. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. Ordained in 1738. In 1759 the first two volumes of The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy were published and well received, further volumes appeared. Lived mostly in France and Italy. Returned to London where he died of pleurisy.
