Educated at Balliol College, Oxford. Won Newdigate Prize for poetry. Works included Studies of the Greek Poets (1873-76) and Renaissance in Italy (1875-86) and Shakespeare’s Predecessors in the English Drama (1884). Suffered from tuberculosis, spent much of life in Italy and Switzerland for health reasons. Last works included Life of Michelangelo (1892).
