Read law at Leeds University. President of National Union of Students. While practising as lawyer became deputy leader of Inner London Education Authority. Advisor to Barbara Castle, then to the Environment Secretary. Became MP for Blackburn in 1979. Joined Shadow Cabinet in 1987. Appointed Home Secretary by Tony Blair in 1997.
