Schoolmaster who turned to botany in 1844. Spent 15 years in South America exploring the Amazon, Orinoco, the Andes and Ecuador. Returned with thousands of plant specimens, maps of previously unexplored rivers and vocabularies of 21 Amazonian tribes.
