Born 1838. Died 1900 - English philosopher.

Educated at Rugby School and Cambridge. Best known work is Methods of Ethics (1874). Founder of Society for Psychical Research in 1882. Promoted higher education for women. Assisted founding a house for woman students, became Newnham College, Cambridge.
