Studied at Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982. Stage performances include Richard III and Tamburlaine the Great. Appeared in the television drama The History Man (1982). Books include The Year of the King (1985), Middlepost (1988) and Cheap Lives (1995) Made KBE in 2000.
