Studied mathematics and natural science in Cambridge and Berlin. Reorganised British Weather Service. Developed the analysis of air currents. Devised the aerological diagram known as the tephigram, still used today. Awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 1923, knighted in 1915.
