Born 1918 - English biochemist and Nobel Prize winner.

Educated at Cambridge. Awarded Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1958 for work on amino acids in the chains of the protein hormone insulin. Began on work on structure of nucleic acids. Awarded Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1980, the first scientist to win two Nobel Prizes in this field. Appointed to the Order of Merit in 1986.
