Apprenticed to Great Northern Railway. Founded firm Royce Ltd in 1884. Made first car in 1904. Formed Rolls-Royce Ltd (motor car builders) in 1906 with Charles Rolls. Later designed the aero-engines that developed into the Merlin engines for Spitfires and Hurricanes in WWII.
