Educated at Sheffield University. Wrote over 150 episodes of Coronation Street (1961-69). Contributed to That Was The Week That Was, created the series The Lovers! (1970). Television plays include Barmitzvah Boy (1976) and London’s Burning (1986). Wrote film script Yentl with Barbra Streisand. Married to Maureen Lipman.
