Born 1931 - Sydney, Australia - British microbiologist.
Studied at Cambridge. Took up readership in molecular biology at University of Edinburgh. Demonstrated that resistant organisms often occur in areas of high antibiotic usage such as hospitals. Elected FRS in 1980 and knighted in 1986.
