Born 1937 - English archaeologist.

Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. Has excavated in Greece and on Orkney. Major publications include The Emergence of Civilization (1972) and Social Archaeology (1986). Contributed to the BBC’s Chronicle series. Made a life peer in 1991.
