Trained as an architect before turning to writing. Wrote for the BBC series Z Cars (1963-65). Television plays include Ted’s Cathedral and The Land of Green Ginger. Has written screen translations, film scripts and novels including The Beiderbecke Affair (1985). Received a BAFTA Writer’s Award in 1989.
