Born 1909. Died 1991 - English physicist.

Educated at universities of Cambridge, London and Wisconsin. Worked on the Manhattan atomic bomb project (1944-45). Leading figure in the production of the UKs atomic and hydrogen bombs. Knighted in 1952. Created a life peer in 1967.
