Born 1914 - Warsaw, Poland. Died 1994 - British composer and conductor.

Studied conducting in Vienna, returned to his native Poland at the beginning of WWII and worked with the underground movement. Left Poland due to his hatred of the Communist regime. Became a British citizen in 1961. Conducted the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Compositions include Sinfonia Rustica (1948) and Sinfonia Sacra (1963). Knighted in 1991.
