1902 - 1994. English novelist & poet.

Educated at St John’s College, Oxford. Successful with his first novel Lucky Jim (1954), followed by That Uncertain Feeling (1956) and I Like It Here (1958). Later novels included Jakes’s Thing (1978), The Folks That Live On The Hill (1990) and The Russian Girl (1992). Won the Booker Prize with The Old Devils (1986). Also published books of poetry and non-fiction works.
