Lawyer before becoming Labour MP for Peckham in 1982. Sat on the frontbench throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Entered Cabinet as Secretary of State for Social Security (1997-98), left the post following disputes over cuts to lone parent benefits. Criticised for sending her three children to selective state schools.
