Born 1900. Died 1979 - English naval commander and statesman.

Great grandson of Queen Victoria. Served at sea in WWI. During WWII was chief of Combined Operations Command (1941-43) and Supreme Allied Commander SE Asia (1943-45). Appointed last Viceroy of India (1947) to oversee transfer of power. Commanded Mediterranean fleet (1952-55), Chief of Defence Staff (1959-65). Murdered by an IRA bomb while sailing in County Sligo, Ireland.
